PLAYERS: Dana Holgorsen
West Virginia Mountaineer’s head coach Dana Holgorsen will be around for a little while longer, not like he was going anywhere…yet. Holgorsen was signed to a six-year contract worth up to $2.3 million dollars. The deal includes $250,000 in base pay and the rest from athletic department revenue or private sources. Holgorsen will now receive annual raises of $200,000 in the second and third years of the contract and $100,000 in the fourth and fifth years of the contract. The deal also includes a buyout of $2 million. West Virginia AD Oliver Luck:
“We have said all along we are going to pay our coach a competitive salary for a very valued and competitive position. I have full confidence in coach Holgorsen and his staff and want them to be with us for a long time.”
“I wake up, come to work and try to make it better every day. Oliver and the administration probably get tired of me asking questions and asking how we can make things better on a daily basis, but my commitment has always been the same. It is just what reality is. When the university commits what it has to me and vice versa, it is a positive. Assistant coaches and players will view this as stability, and they are going to want to be here. It is going to help in recruiting, ticket sales and all of the rest.”
Holgorsen will also receive $75,000 on December 8th each year (that’s a nice christmas bonus), $50,000 on March 1st, 2013, and $300,000 on March 1st, 2014. Bonuses will include: $200,000 for 12 regular-season wins, $200,000 for a national championship appearance, $250,000 on top of the $200,000 for winning a national championship, capped at $600,000. Look for our preview of the Mountaineers later this month as we think they could be a dark horse national championship contender. HT CBS Sports

Barber Meets Early Challenges

West Virginia sophomore linebacker Jared Barber is ins something of an odd position as fall football camp unfolds for the Mountaineers. He's learning a new defense, and he's just a second year player, yet he finds himself thrust into a role that might demand leadership and teaching skills that are usually reserved for upperclassmen.
