Any chance of Indiana football becoming relevant in my lifetime went kaput on Tuesday when top quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel of Columbus, Ind. committed to LSU.

Kiel had originally given Hoosier fans their first glimmer of hope since the Anthony Thompson Era — or at least since the death of Terry Hoeppner — when he shocked the world by verbally committing to IU earlier this year. However, as Indiana struggled on the field under first-year ******* coach Kevin Wilson, Kiel declared that he was “keeping his options open.”

This week’s announcement officially threw any sliver of a hair of possibility that IU might still be one of those options out the window. The fact that IU sucked this year wasn’t even the biggest reason for Kiel backing out — after all, the Hoosiers sucking at football is a given.

According to Kiel’s father, “a lot of things are concerning” about the situation at Indiana. And he would know since Gunner’s older brother was on the roster during this dreadful 1-11 season where the only win came against a I-AA opponent.

Reading between the lines, I’m pretty sure what Kiel’s dad meant to say was “Kevin Wilson is a total disgrace to humanity.”

It is now clear that all the bluster with which Wilson came into the job was just a giant squall of ********. The guy is the most unqualified idiot to take over a program in a BCS conference since Tim Brewster at Minnesota. Surprisingly — maybe it’s only because no one cares about IU football — the domain name firekevinwilson.com is still available. My new year’s resolution for 2012 is to make sure that is no longer the case.

I am usually an advocate for giving a coach at least three years to get a program turned around, and things have to be pretty bad for there not to be a fourth year added to that equation. But Wilson’s unrepentantly douchy behavior off the field and his pathetic record on it show that unless the Hoosiers make a marked turnaround next year, his ass needs to go. And considering the lack of talent in the program, I don’t think we need to concern ourselves with the possibility of a marked turnaround.

With any luck, 2013 will bring another new football coach to Bloomington. Since there is no hope of turning things around, the Hoosiers might as well go the nostalgic route and hire Mike Mallory, son of Bill and current assistant special teams coach for the Saints.

What’s the harm? Odds are IU is going to suck anyway. Might as well do it with someone people can actually get behind.
