The first FIU football player to enter the transfer portal this cycle is quarterback Grayson James. James has been with the program since 2021, the final year of the Butch Davis era.
The 6'3", 235-pound quarterback enters the portal with two years left of eligibility and has plenty of starting experience at the FBS level. James' best season came this past year where the sophomore, at the time, threw for 1,969 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

James was named the starting quarterback entering the 2023 season, but following one start against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, James was benched and the reins were given to true freshman Keyone Jenkins, who ended up making every start following that.
Although James didn't start another game, he did appear in three games, protecting his redshirt year, but saw action against Jacksonville State where he threw for 200 yards, one passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown.
James has the ability to extend plays and can make passes that not all G5 quarterbacks can make. He should receive interest from schools at the G5 and FCS level, especially since he has two years left and has made 12 starts through three years with FIU. Throughout his three seasons at FIU, James threw for 2,349 yards and 13 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
