Florida State Defensive Tackle Officially Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Florida State has been dealing with some drama behind the scenes over the last couple of days after promising redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Joshua Farmer announced that he'd be testing the transfer portal waters on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, Farmer's name officially appeared in the NCAA Transfer Portal and he's also been removed from the Seminoles 2023-24 roster. As of now, it appears that this situation is over and that he'll be moving on from the program. Technically, he still could return to the team but that option is growing slimmer and slimmer.

This is certainly a disappointing development with speculation that redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Darrell Jackson could follow Farmer into the portal. It's important to note that Jackson reaffirmed that he remains a Seminole on social media last night and is still on the roster at this time.

The two played together locally at Gadsden County High School under head coach Corey Fuller, who is now a member of Florida State's off-field staff. It's no secret that Jackson and Farmer are close friends and wanted to reunite at the college level. At the same time, Jackson's only conceivable path to seeing playing time in 2023 is staying in Tallahassee and receiving a waiver from the NCAA.

Farmer turned in a breakout campaign in 2022 as he appeared in all 13 games and recorded 15 tackles, six tackles for loss, and two sacks. He ended up leading all freshmen in the ACC in tackles for loss and was named one of Florida State's Co-Freshmen of the Year alongside defensive end Patrick Payton.

The Florida native is arguably the Seminoles' biggest loss to the portal so far this spring. He was expected to be a member of the rotation at defensive tackle this upcoming season alongside Fabien Lovett, Braden Fiske, Jackson, Dennis Briggs, Malcolm Ray, Daniel Lyons, and others. This blow hits Florida State even more when projecting out to 2024 because Farmer likely would've been a starter.

Farmer is expected to be a hot commodity on the transfer market. Two other players that recently transferred from Florida State - defensive end Derrick McLendon II and linebacker Brendan Gant - landed at Colorado earlier this week. Other former Seminoles such as defensive tackle Antavious Woody, offensive lineman Zane Herring, and linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. are still looking for new homes.
