TALLAHASSEE Florida State reserve linebacker Arrington Jenkins was arrested on Sunday and charged with grand theft, allegedly for stealing a motorcycle.
Jenkins and Avis Commack, who was arrested in a separate incident on Friday, have been suspended by coach Jimbo Fisher for the Champs Sports Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 29.
Both of them are suspended as of right now from the team, Fisher said. Ill comment when everything runs its course. Its a shame. Its very disappointing.
Jenkins, a redshirt freshman this season, told a Tallahassee Police Department officer that he found the motorcycle out in the open.
Anyone who leaves a motorcycle out in the open should expect to have it stolen, Jenkins is quoted as telling a TPD officer in a probable cause affidavit released Monday.
A man called TPD at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning and said that his motorcycle was stolen from the back of his truck, which was parked at his apartment building off Chapel Drive. TPD filed a report, but in the afternoon the victim said he noticed skid marks leading from his truck to the front door of another apartment just down the road.
Jenkins was then interviewed by TPD and said he was familiar with motorcycles and said that he planned on riding it in the afternoon. He said that he found the motorcycle on the ground and took it to his apartment and put it in his room.
The motorcycle was returned to the victim, who told TPD that there was extensive damage to it.
A native of Miami, Jenkins was a three-star prospect by Scout.com coming out of Coral Park High School. Jenkins was redshirting this season but is expected to have an impact at linebacker in 2012 and beyond.
Jenkins arrest was the second in three days for FSU. Commack, a defensive back, was arrested on Friday just hours before he walked in his graduation ceremony for allegedly stealing an iPad from another FSU student.
Commack has nine tackles this season, mostly on special teams.
Fisher did not comment on the future of either player beyond the bowl game since the case is pending.
But one reason that Jenkins could remain on FSUs roster is that dismissing him would mean the football team takes a hit in the Academic Progress Rate (APR), which determines if a team is eligible for postseason play.
In 2012, the NCAA is raising the APR requirement from 900 to 930, meaning that there is smaller margin for coaches to dismiss student-athletes from a team before they graduate.
