New released late yesterday indicating that the current BCS system for determining a national champion in college football is about to be eliminated and replaced with an actual playoff system – of sorts. Commissioners from all of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conferences announced last night that they have reached agreement on a plan to implement a playoff system for college football as early as the 2014-2015 season. This agreement is just the first step. More details need to be worked out, and the overall plan has to be approved by the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee. That approve could come next Tuesday when the commissioners plan to present their new playoff structure to the Committee.

The playoff, if approved as is, would create a selection committee similar to that used in NCAA Basketball. The selection committee would determine the four top football programs that would compete for the national title. Two semifinal games would be played to determine who would play in the National Championship game. These semifinal games would be played as part of the existing bowl games. It has not yet been worked out how they would determined which bowl games would host the semifinals. The National Championship Game itself would most likely be played a week after the conclusion of the bowl games. The location of that game would be open to bids with the highest bidder winning the right to host the game.

This is a step in the direction being demanded by fans for a very long time. But, with only four games being selected to have a chance at the championship, it's unlikely that this format will appease fans for long. It is more likely that this is only the start toward a much larger playoff format.
