Calvin Barnett can't wait to get on the field when Oklahoma State opens the season Saturday afternoon against Mississippi State in the Texas Kickoff Classic. The preseason first-team All-Big 12 honoree spoke with the media last week about a variety of topics, including the SEC's dominance, playing in an NFL stadium, waiting eight months between games, and much more.
BEST OF MAXIM
Calvin Barnett is ready to hit somebody. He’s spent the past month facing off in practice against teammates Parker Graham, Jake Jenkins, Brandon Webb and other offensive linemen. He’ll get his chance to hit somebody different Saturday when the Oklahoma State defensive tackle goes up against a massive Mississippi State offensive line that averages better than 6-foot-5 and 314 pounds.
Justin Gilbert is ready for his senior season to begin Saturday. The Oklahoma State cornerback is motivated to put the disappointment of last season behind him and show Cowboys fans the new, improved version. GoPokes.com caught up with the senior from Huntsville, Texas to ask about the upcoming season, newcomer Tyler Patmon and more.
STILLWATER - As we wrote in the earlier story, Oklahoma State defensive tackle Calvin Barnett needs to be the heaviest of defenders Saturday if the Cowboys, as expected, face a rushing onslaught from Mississippi State. But how about the reverse matchup of the Mississippi State defense trying to slow down, stopping might be impossible, the Oklahoma State up-tempo, spread, no-huddle attack?
Shaun Lewis has 177 career tackles while starting a team-best 32 consecutive games. Caleb Lavey has 137 career tackles while starting 26 consecutive games. On the other hand, Ryan Simmons has 26 career tackles, and the third-year sophomore is expected to make his first career start Saturday when Oklahoma State faces Mississippi State in the Texas Kickoff Classic in Houston.
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State has had relatively quiet and that's the way head coach Mike Gundy wanted it. There are a few things that have leaked out, like left tackle Devin Davis suffering an ACL injury to his right knee, freshman wide receiver Marcell Ateman standing out, and it's been pretty clear that senior "star" linebacker Shaun Lewis has had a great camp.
STILLWATER -- When the Oklahoma State football team finished Wednesday's practice in the Sherman E. Smith Training Center they got a look at the team's new rolling image on the highway for road trips and neutral games like this weekend's game in Houston.
