Illinois’ 2011 second All-B1G Defensive End, Michael Buchanan, broke his jaw in a fight this weekend.
Illinois sports information director Kent Brown said Wednesday that Buchanan’s jaw is wired shut after a fight Saturday night somewhere in the Champaign area. Brown said the university was still trying to determine exactly what happened.
“It was just a mishap,” Illinois Coach Tim Beckman said. ”He’ll get himself ready and he’ll get himself right… He’s a little distraught by it. Of course, nobody wants to break their jaw.”
The Illinois staff is optimistic that Buchanan will be able to participate in spring practices in early August. There is a strong possibility Buchanan will be unable to maintain his current weight as he will be eating through a straw for the next couple of months. Buchanan is a 6′ 6″, 240 pound, defensive lineman that has been projected to lead the Illini’s 2012 defense. In 2011 he had 64 tackles, 7 1/2 sacks, 13.5 TFL, and a forced fumble. Illinois opens their season Sept. 1 against the Western Michigan Broncos at 11:00 a.m. CT on ESPNU. HT Throw The Flag
