College Football News: Injuries Piling Up In Fall Practices

By SBRForum.com

Unlike the NFL, there are no preseason games in college football. Many seem to think that avoiding those exhibition games can prevent injuries but even without the live action, a number of players are finding themselves on the infirmary reports.

South Carolina has again lost cornerback Akeem Auguste and running back Shon Carson. Bother were injured early on last season and will be sidelined indefinitely. August was expected to be one of the Gamecocks’ starting cornerbacks but he’ll now be out for about five weeks after tearing a muscle in his right thigh during scrimmage on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Carson, who was limited just to two games last season, underwent a procedure on his left wrist after suffering the injury in Friday. He was projected to be one of Marcus Lattimore’s backups.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish also took a hit to their secondary when cornerback Lo Wood suffered what will likely be a season-ending Achilles injury. Wood was expected to be a starter and now without him, a very thin group of Irish cornerbacks just got thinner.

In Florida, the Gators got some bad news in the tight ends department as freshman Colin Thompson will have to go under the knife for the second time and will miss at least two months of action. The Gators are already thin at tight end with A.C. Leonard transferring and starter Jordan Reed sidelined with an MCL sprain. The Gators are now left with just three healthy tight ends, none of whom have caught a pass in a game.

Thompson was expected to be a useful weapon for the Gators after being the nation’s No. 2 tight end out of high school. The Gators will have to adjust to life without him until about November.

Those making their college football picks next week should keep a close eye on the wire reports to make sure no key injuries are affecting their contests.
