Michigan Football will kickoff the 2013 season on August 31 when they host Central Michigan at the Big House. Between now and then, the Wolverines will put in a lot of work and some freshmen players will start to separate themselves from the pack and have a chance to make an immediate impact. Here are 10 freshmen of the redshirt and true variety that could/should make an impact on the field this fall. Derrick Green 1. Derrick Green – RB: He was the #1 ranked running back in the country last year and is physically ready to play right away. Green is a natural fit for the power running scheme that Brady Hoke and Al Borges have been waiting to install at Michigan. He’s so good that he could end up being the team’s leading rusher this year. 2. Kyle Kalis – OL: Kalis is a redshirt freshman who spent last year impressing coaches and players with his tenacity on the scout team. He is penciled in to be the starter at left guard. He plays with a nasty streak and is an absolute mauler. He has All-Big Ten potential – this season. 3. Dymonte Thomas – DB: The 6-foot-2, 187 pounder, enrolled early and has caught the eye of the coaching staff with his athleticism and ability to blitz from the corner. He will see a lot of action at nickel back. 4. Ben Braden – OL: Although his future is likely at tackle, Braden projects as the starter at right guard this year. At 6-foot-6, 315 pounds he is a massive specimen with unlimited potential. 5. Chris Wormley – DL: He was set to contribute as a true freshman last year before suffering a season-ending injury in camp. He is know bigger and stronger and should help increase Michigan’s sack totals this year. 6. Taco Charlton – DL: He is a freak athlete and a physical specimen who has already bulked up since he enrolled in January. The sky is the limit for this playmaking end and he will have every opportunity to make an impact this season. 7. Willie Henry – DL: A redshirt freshman, Henry checks in at 6-foot-2, 302 pounds. He should factor into the two-deep at defensive tackle and has all the tools to become a very good player for the Wolverines. 8. Matthew Godin – DL: He’s another redshirt freshman and another guy the coaching staff really likes. 9. Reon Dawson – DB: He is fast and athletic and there is a void on the two-deep at the safety positions. Keep an eye on Dawson, he could be a sleeper candidate to play early. 10. Jehu Chesson – WR: Michigan has a need for playmaking wide receivers. Chesson redshirted last year and was able to add some bulk to his long frame. He now checks in at 6-3, 193 and hasn’t lost any of his burst. There are, of course, other freshmen who may make an impact this fall. Keep an eye on the defensive backs, wide receivers, defensive linemen and running backs. One of the most anticipated recruits to be joining the team this year is quarterback Shane Morris, he is slated to be the primary back up to Devin Gardner.
