Michigan Football lost 13-6 to Notre Dame on Saturday night. The Wolverines self-destructed with 6 turnovers and a missed field goal. Denard Robinson fired 4 interceptions and lost a fumble. The loss drops Michigan’s record to 2-2 and will knock them out of the Top 25. Meanwhile, Notre Dame improved to 4-0.

Michigan’s defense played well, holding the Irish to 239 yards of total offense. They also snagged two interceptions, but 6 turnovers are awfully hard for a football team to overcome.

The offense made 5 trips into the red zone and came away with 2 field goals. Denard Robinson finished the game 13-24 for 138 yards with the 4 interceptions. He rushed 26 times for 90 yards. Every time the offense would get some momentum going, they would unravel with a penalty or turnover and couldn’t penetrate into the end zone.

The turning point in the game came in the first quarter with the score tied 0-0. Michigan started a drive back on their own 12 yard line and methodically moved the ball down the field. They had a 1st and goal at the 10 yard line and decided to run a halfback pass. Vincent Smith was getting swarmed and tossed the ball up for grabs which resulted in a Notre Dame interception. If Michigan is able to score a touchdown there, this game might have turned out very differently. Instead, the interception was a foreshadowing of how the rest of the game would unfold.

Michigan’s offense ran 11 plays in the 2nd quarter, 4 of them resulted in Denard Robinson interceptions.

On U-M’s first drive of the second half they were trailing 10-0 and started at their own 21 yard line. The first play of the drive was a 31 yard run by Fitz Toussaint which seemed to breathe some life into the offense. They marched all the way down to the Notre Dame 16 yard line and a touchdown felt like a foregone conclusion. However, on a 3rd down and 3 play, Robinson fumbled the ball away on what would have been a first down run.

Michigan’s defense kept rising to the occasion and giving the offense another chance to score a touchdown. It just never happened.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o was the best player on the field. The senior tallied 8 tackles and 2 interceptions to lead the Irish to victory.

Michigan heads into their bye week with a 2-2 record and will open the Big Ten season at Purdue on October 6th
