Although not having proved himself on the field yet, junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell was voted as one of the team captains on Thursday, Aug. 23. Joining him are linebackers Max Bullough (junior) and Chris Norman (senior).

“Maxwell is a leader by example,” Norman said. “Max (Bullough), he’ll get up and he’ll talk in front of the team, get everybody pumped up. Me, it depends on the situation. I can be a leader by example, or when the time comes up get up and say something. I think we all bring something different.”

“I just look at myself as an emotional leader,” Bullough added. “It’s very humbling from a group of guys that you share everything with. They sweat with you and they bleed with you and they cry with you. To be chosen it really means the world to me.”

Unlike the defense, there are several of questions being tossed around about Maxwell and the offense. One question that remains is who will emerge as the top receivers this season. According to Head Coach Mark Dantonio, junior Bennie Fowler is having a Devin Thomas-like fall camp.

Thomas had a breakout junior season in 2007 before being selected in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. In 2007, Thomas recorded 2,590 all-purpose yards, including 1, 260 receiving yards and 8 touchdown receptions.

“I mean what’d he (Thomas) have, like 79 catches or something that year?” Maxwell said. “That’s high praise. Physically, they’re similar and bigger guys. They’ve got speed, they’ve got the ability to go up and get the ball and make a tough catch.”

If Fowler can put up those kind of numbers this year, the Spartans should be in Pasadena on Jan 1.

Dantonio says Kings and Cox are most impressive true freshmen

“Macgarrett Kings, I think is a guy that is on the fringe,” Dantonio said. “Demetrious Cox is another guy that you’re gonna see play. At this point we don’t want to just play a guy to play a guy. They have he ability and they’ll work up on our field.”

Cox is currently in a battle at the free safety position with junior Jairus Jones, sophomore Kurtis Drummond, and redshirt freshman R.J. Williamson. Kings could provide depth at the wide receiver position that doesn’t have a ton of experience.

“It’s been a constant learning process for Macgarrett,” said Maxwell. “He’s got a lot of raw talent, he’s got a lot of moves, he’s got a lot of speed, and we’re excited to see what he can do for us.”
