Michigan State football adds former Buckeye to roster
USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State football turned to a Big Ten East division rival to address one of its areas of need heading into the 2023 season.

On Wednesday evening, former Ohio State punter Michael O'Shaughnessy announced his commitment to the Spartans via social media. O'Shaughnessy had spent the previous four seasons with the Buckeyes, but attempted just one punt for OSU — a 41-yarder this past season against Maryland. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Michigan State will need to find a new starting punter next season after consensus first team All-American Bryce Baringer used his sxth and final season of collegiate eligibility. Baringer was named Big Ten Punter of the Year after a remarkable 2022 campaign.

The only punter listed on the Spartans' roster in 2022 outside of Baringer was freshman walk-on Ryan Eckley, who had one punt of 41 yards for MSU last season. The addition of O'Shaughnessy will provide valuable competition at the punter position.

O'Shaughnessy is the second former Ohio State special teamer to transfer to Michigan State via the portal, joining long snapper Mason Arnold. THe Spartans also added former North Carolina kicker Jonathan Kim to its special teams unit this offseason. MSU special teams coordinator Ross Els will have plenty of options in sorting out his starters for 2023.
