Another week of Michigan State football has passed by and still the quarterback situation looms in the air. After less than stellar play from both Michigan State quarterbacks who played in last Friday night’s rainy 26-13 over Western Michigan, it still potentially leaves the starting job open to all four guys. And even if that wasn’t the case, don’t expect Michigan State head football coach Mark Dantonio to make the cloudy situation any more clearer. “I think the main focus is what we do internally with the quarterback situation. We’re going to look at things as the week progresses and make some decisions. I’m not going to talk about who’s starting right now,” Dantonio said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday. Mark Dantonio is budging on the current quarterback situation right now at Michigan State. That’s about all Dantonio would give the media on Tuesday about the quarterback situation. After dodging quarterback questions with short phrase answers like “That’s a quarterback question” indicating he’s not speaking about it as well as “With opportunity comes opposition” in regards to position battles on the team, including that of the quarterback situation, Michigan State fans are still left in question as to who is going to be the primary guy out there on Saturday against South Florida. “I don’t want this to be a media circus,” Dantonio said, dodging another quarterback question.  ”But I do realize that is the nature of society.” However, how much can really be known about this controversy in the first place? After less than stellar stat lines from both senior Andrew Maxwell (11-21, 74 yards, 0 touchdowns) and red shirt sophomore Connor Cook (6-16, 42 yards, 0 touchdowns), neither guy did very much at all to distance himself from the other. Even with Cook’s added threat on the ground (4 rushes for 35 yards), he still failed to move the offense on a consistent basis. And while eleven stalled drives Friday night led to eleven more Mike Sadler punts, the drenched fans in the stands Friday grew weary as shouts of “We want Terry” broke out in the stands. The “We want Terry” chant refers to true freshman quarterback Damion Terry. The heralded recruit arrived on campus and was thought to not be much of a factor for this season and was expected to live out a red shirt season. However, Terry burst on to the season in camp, putting up good numbers in scrimmages, all the while showing off his athleticism. So if Michigan State fans want to see punter Mike Sadler punting less and holding extra point kicks more, the quarterback play is going to have to improve. So. Why not Terry? “He’s a true freshman,” Dantonio said of Terry. “He just got here. You don’t want to ruin a person.” Yeah but what if Terry is the best guy Dantonio’s got? What if Maxwell and Cook just don’t have what it takes? Even though Dantonio has stated that he doesn’t mind starting a freshman, it appears the only reason he won’t play Terry is for exactly that reason: Because he’s a freshman. But we’re seeing freshman start all over the country now. Look at Texas Tech for example. In their pass happy offense, they turned to WALK ON TRUE FRESHMAN quarterback Baker Mayfield. And he lit it up! He completed 71% of his passes for 413 yards and 4 touchdowns as Texas Tech throttled SMU 41-23. So why not Terry?   Follow Ryan Squanda on Twitter @squandaryan
