  • The guy who wrote this article is a moron. Not for his opinion, after all i kind of like his top 20 (except for Hawaii), but for his incorrect use of the word acronym in describing LSU. An acronym MUST be a word, as in "laser" and "radar", and it has to be made form the first letter of all the other words. Ave. for avenue does not qualify and neither does NFL, which is an initialism as well as an abbreviation, but not an acronym.
  • my list 20. South Carolina, 19. Miami, FL, 18. Virginia, 17. Iowa, 16. Colorado, 15. Wyoming, 14. Utah, 13. North Carolina, 12. Nevada, 11. USC, 10. Arkansas, 9. Colorado State, 8. Michigan State, 7. Texas, 6. LSU, 5. Clemson, 4. Georgia, 3. Arizona, 2. Florida State, 1. Michigan
  • correction:nnmy number 3. should have been arizona state instead of arizona.
  • Well it looks like favoritism. If you are going to have Georgia and LSU, why not UK, Missouri, Oregon, UMass, UTEP, come on. At least make it interesting. An orange and green U, kindergartner can do better.
  • Hmmmm....must be another sad....pathetic Beaver fan....perhaps, a Washington lover? Better luck next year!! LMAO
  • Where is Iowa, Kansas State, Purdue,
    Cincinnati, Colorado State? Michigan
is a classic, LSU needs a graphic update,
Ohio State (Yawn), both Georgia and Miami (FLA)
are good, So.Cal Nebraska and Alabama boring.
Penn State you have to be kidding. The old Pitt
script was great, Air Force too. Texas is ok, Texas Tech
very good, as are Stanford Washington and Cal. Gators is
    catchy, Fla State also good.
  • MICHIGAN'S IS SWEET! THE NEW ARIZONA STATE HELMET IS AWESOME ALSO!
  • The person who wrote this is clueless. EVERBODY who plays in a post season all star game will rock the "W" from "WASHINGTON" on the side of their helmets... So you are trippin. ARKANSAS and WEST VIRGINIA? Seriously???????? WoW......... Put them on our schedule anytime....
  • Go Noles!
  • HTF are the Gators NO where on this list? UF! The Gator Head??? Stupid....really you pick the other 2 majors in Florida?
  • Just one note-The "Block G" on the Packers helmets was first in 1961, and stands for GREATNESS not Greenbay. Georgia did not start using the "G" until 1964....
  • Regarding the Greenbay's "G" for greatness ... thanks for sharing this cool bit-o-history. I did not know that.
  • There are two things missing from this article's rankings. Credibility and Texas A&M's helmet. If the ranking is based on tradition, originality, etc, as this article suggest; then how can you leave out schools like A&M, Florida, and Iowa. If you are placing the "Irish" gold and plain white helmet from Penn State, why not Syracuse orange. I love all the rich tradition and history BYU, WV, and Hawaii adds to college football. I would share my favorite one, except that I don't know of any???
  • For those of you that feel slighted, don't feel too bad. This guy is clearly a college football novice since he doesn't even know that Death Valley is at Clemson, not Lsu. The name of Clemson's stadium was coined Death Valley in the late 40's, and then in the 80's a reporter started calling Lsu's stadium Deaf Valley as a play on words. That is why there is a rock from Death Valley, California sitting on top of the hill that Clemson runs down. Anyone who doesn't know that the true Death Valley is in Clemson (there is a Death Valley sign on Clemson's stadium, but not Lsu's), just isn't very knowledgeable about college football.

  • By the way, Kurth, you obviously love your Florida Gator helmets, but speaking as an objective college football fan there's no way they should be on this list. The word "Gators" spelled in cursive?? LOL It's very high school-looking. This is a list of classic college football helmets, not a list of power house programs.
  • G
  • List is OK, but clearly slanted toward historically successful and big schools. There are a bunch of other cool ones out there (from lesser programs) that have been discussed on similar ranking articles.
  • Ho-boy..make an esthetic judgment, and watch the gallows go up..

Most helmet designs stink, and there are thousands of 'em across the land. For that matter, the uniforms are getting downright silly. As for this reader's "who cares?" remarks on the list:
Michigan does have the best, but while Crisler brought the Tigers' design with him, both were designs in which the leather helmets then worn were painted with the schools' colors on the crown AND the re-enforcing visor and stripes. Michigan's design was painted on its Goldsmith Gladiator hats starting 1939, and Princeton's, on another Goldsmith model..My choice for best applied symbol is Air Force's thunderbolt. (Sharp!) If they'd just ditch that bs center-stripes addition--universally ruinous--AFs would be truly one for the ages..by the way, AFs hat decoration debuted in '55, the same year as Colorado's, which have had stinkers all along (find photos from '55-65! Ouch.) They started the now-common practice of applied designs/logo's..FSU (riffing on the great Redskins design from the mid-60s), ND (best overall look) and Texas are also tops. LSUs always intrigues, as its look seems almost machined. Cal had a nice bearclaw in the 80s, then put "Cal" (including the Steelers' idea of the logo on one side)..Finally, the leather era produced some snazzy designs, most prominently the 'rotunda dome'. My favorite is the (manufacturer?) model worn by the Georgia Tech 1928 national champs, also Tulane..Good luck trying to get the CFF&Hall of Fame's attention on this subject..

RUMORS & GOSSIP

LeBron James misses Cavs-Blazers game due to wrist injury

The Cleveland Cavaliers are riding high, owners of a seven-game winning streak, but to continue it, they’ll need to do so without LeBron James. The Cavaliers announced just before Wednesday night’s tipoff that James would miss his career-high 10th game of the season with a sore right wrist. He is also likely to miss an 11th game on Friday against Sacramento. LeBron James out...

Mayweather visited Pacquiao’s hotel room for private meeting

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao appear to be serious about finally fighting. The two boxers met at halftime of the Miami Heat-Milwaukee Bucks game on Tuesday by chance (video here); Mayweather attends Heat games regularly, and Pacquiao happened to be in town because he judged a beauty pageant over the weekend. Pac-Man’s flight plans...Read More

Seahawks GM: Russell Wilson's contract 'presents challenges'

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider is among the best in the business. Working with head coach Pete Carroll, the two have built a team that’s on the brink of a dynasty. This doesn’t mean that Schneider’s job is easy by any stretch of the imagination. That promises to come to the forefront as the team negotiates what will be huge contract for star quarterback Russell...

JR Smith: Lack of partying in Cleveland is better than NY

JR Smith has had a bigger role in 11 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers than he had with the New York Knicks. While he’s still shooting just 40 percent from the field since the trade, Smith is averaging 14.3 points and 32.7 minutes per game with the Cavs. Is that because he cut back on...Read More

Paul Pierce: Computers to blame for lack of NBA trash talk

Paul Pierce seems to be fully embracing his role as the NBA’s awesome old guy.   Pierce continues to be a legitimate contributor for one of the Washington Wizards — one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams — but his play might be taking a back seat to the things he continues to say. The former Boston Celtics star doesn’t limit his talk to off the court, though. He...

A recent history of Super Bowl injury hullabaloo

In the slightly altered words of someone much wittier than I, the sports media just survived a harrowing bye week. Bronko Nagurski didn’t get any bye weeks. And now he’s dead. We, however, were very much alive, and need things to talk about. Super Bowl bye week story lines range from … no they don’t range. They’re always ridiculous. Sometimes they’re real problems presented...

DeflateGate football could fetch $50K at auction

D’Qwell Jackson probably wishes he’d held onto that football now.   The football that allegedly sparked DeflateGate after the Indianapolis Colts linebacker intercepted New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the AFC Championship Game could fetch as much as $50,000, according to noted auction house Lelands. The infamous ball would be the most valuable, but not the only...
