There are moments (which seem to happen more during the college football off-season, then at any other time) where stories come out that simply seem too good to be true. Or in some cases too bad to be true. Whatever the case, they’re so unbelievable, so outlandish, so ridiculous, that they really need to be heard to be believed. One of those stories came on Monday afternoon, and came courtesy of Urban Meyer, who was speaking at an Ohio coaches convention. After waxing poetic about his program, changes in recruiting tactics by younger coaches and the state of Big Ten recruiting in general, well, Urban just got a little weird. Actually, in Urban’s defense, it was more a story of legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes getting weird, when Urban was on Earl Bruce’s OSU staff in the 1980’s. Here is the story, with a big thanks to CoachingSearch.com for sharing it with us: "So I guess Ohio State had lost the bowl game, so Earl Bruce brings in Woody Hayes. I had been there just a week and I'm thinking, 'Holy, this is Coach Hayes.' I'm sitting in the back. Coach Hayes was not healthy at the time, but stands up and starts laying into the coaching staff about toughness. That we have no toughness in the program. That's why we lost the game. On and on and screaming, this old guy pounding the table. He says, 'We have no toughness, and the reason is because you're not tough. No one on this staff is tough enough, and that's a problem.' "He reaches down and grabs this box, slides the top and there was something in the box moving around. He reaches in and he pulls out this turtle. He reaches down, this turtle's snapping and he says, 'I'm going to show you toughness.' He unzips his pants and takes out whatever he takes out. The turtle reaches up and snaps at him. You see the veins and the sweat (on Hayes). He screams at the coaches, 'That's toughness! That's f'n toughness!' He reaches down, pokes the turtle right in the eye and it falls off. He wipes the sweat off his forehead and says, 'That's the problem. We don't have anybody in this room tough enough to do that right there. "(One assistant) raises his hand and says, 'Coach, I'd do this. Just promise not to poke me in the eye.'" So yeah, about that, huh? Safe to say that we have officially arrived in college football's off-season. • thats not a true story----it is however, one of the oldest jokes around-----Meyer was trying to make a point and used this joke as support for his point - John
  • Now that's funny! Even if it isn't true, it's hilarious.
  • Urban Meyer truly is not playing with a full deck ever since the resignation at Florida then the change of heart thing. He's just plain weird and arrogant !!!
  • maybe, but he did lead Ohio State to an undefeated season last year, even though they weren't bowl elegible, so I'd say his coaching ability hasn't suffered one bit since leaving Florida ... just saying ...
  • and that's how Woody Hayes became Jewish
  • I heard this story in the mid 1970's. However, it was about Bo Schemechler prior to a OSU vs Michigan game. Bo brought a basket of snapping turtles on the practice field the evening before the game. He had the turtle latch onto his whatever. he winched but let it hold on. He then put his finger in the turtles eye and it released its grasp. The player watch in disbelief. Then he ask if there was any Michigan player that was tough enough to come up and repeat the feat. After a while one player raised his hand and said "I'll do it coach but please don't put your finger in my eye."

The NBA needs to leave 'hack-a-whoever' rules alone

There’s conversation going on in NBA circles regarding the intentional fouling of poor free-throw shooters in playoff games. Some of that conversation is going on right here at this site. My colleague Matt Zemek makes the case that allowing “Hack-A-Player” strategies rewards the breaking of the rules and should be eliminated. I disagree on two fronts. First, I am adamantly...

Pettine: Manziel isn't favorite for Browns' starting QB job

Johnny Manziel will need more than an apology to find his way onto a football field this fall.   Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine indicated as much Monday during a radio interview with 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, telling the hosts it’s “fair to say” Josh McCown will be the favorite to earn the starting quarterback job entering training camp. Randy Gregory denies 'weed problem,' says he's immature

Given reports of Randy Gregory’s marijuana use in college and that he missed at least three pre-draft meetings with teams, it’s not surprising that Gregory fell to the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, where the Dallas Cowboys selected him with the 60th-overall pick. But the edge rusher does not believe that his marijuana use, in particular, is what precipitated his slide...

Eagles coach Chip Kelly made a mess at quarterback

If you thought that just because the NFL Draft was over that the Marcus Mariota to the Philadelphia Eagles speculation would end, then you clearly haven’t seen enough horror movies. Teammate: Zach Mettenberger sees himself as Titans starter

The Tennessee Titans threw some people for a curve when they settled on selecting Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Mettenberger will likely be sitting behind Mariota as a backup this fall....
