On a cool Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio State Buckeyes won a shootout with the Nebraska Cornhuskers 63-38. While the Buckeyes improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Ten, the Cornhuskers were left scratching their heads only a week after pulling out an impressive come from behind victory against the Wisconsin Badgers.

As the dust finally settled on this game, what were the good, the bad, and the ugly?

The Good

The Buckeyes, led once again by quarterback Braxton Miller, steamrolled the Cornhuskers on their way to scoring 63 points. Miller ran for 186 yards and one touchdown on the day.

Running back Carlos Hyde would add another 140 yards and 2 TDs on the ground, including a 16-yard jaunt in which he steamrolled around the right end for the Buckeyes final score. Even little-used tailback Rod Smith got in on the action, bull rushing his way to the endzone for a 33 yard TD.

The Buckeyes were also helped by the opportunistic play of their defense (which forced four turnovers on the day), and the improved play of their special teams (Corey ‘Philly’ Brown would return a punt 76 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter).

The Bad

The Buckeyes first quarter offense went three and out on their first four possessions. Ohio State’s inefficiency on offense early allowed the ‘Huskers to jump out to an early 14-7 first quarter lead that they would extend to 17-7 early in the second.

Ohio State’s lone score in the first quarter came via a Bradley Roby interception that was returned for a touchdown.

The Ugly

A Nebraska Cornhuskers defense that allowed the Buckeyes to amass 498 yards of total offense and 63 points before the night had come to an end. Some people would argue that Urban Meyer was just piling it on at the end, as there was no need for the Buckeyes to score another touchdown. But Meyer’s game plan was to (literally) run the clock out, and the Cornhuskers could not stop Miller, Hyde, nor anyone else on the Buckeyes for that matter.

Only a week after seeming shutting down the Wisconsin offense in the second half of their game versus the Badgers, Nebraska gave up 28 points to Ohio State after the intermission. It’s back to the drawing board for Bo Pelini and his haunches after this humbling defeat.
