Saban announces decision on Alabama starting QB
Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Saban has made his decision on who will quarterback the Alabama Crimson Tide moving forward.

Saban said Monday that Jalen Milroe will be Alabama’s starter for the remainder of the season, adding that Milroe has “earned the opportunity” to start.

The quarterback position has become a clear issue for Alabama as the team has gotten off to a slow start to 2023. He was the starter in the team’s first two games of the season, throwing five touchdown passes and two interceptions in two games, one of them a loss to Texas. Alabama decided to give Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner a look against USF, but he was benched in the first half for freshman Ty Simpson, who was not significantly better.

Of the three quarterbacks that have played for Alabama this year, Milroe has been the best, and the decision to bench him was criticized in some surprising quarters. The question is whether Milroe is good enough to lead Alabama back to the College Football Playoff. The team has no margin for error with one loss already.
