As the North Carolina football team prepares for the first year under new head coach Larry Fedora, the defensive side of the squad took a major hit in preparing to show off their 4-2-5 hybrid D. Junior outside line backer Darius Lipford has re-injured his left knee, the same that the young man had torn his ACL during the Independence Bowl versus Missouri last December 26th. From a small post on Inside Carolina it says that the 6’3″/230 lbs LB hurt himself while rehabbing the knee last week and surgery has been scheduled for sometimes in August, taking the defensive player out for the 2012 season.

Lipford, who started all games last year under interim head coach Everett Withers, had 42 tackles as well as being credited for blocking four passes in thirteen match ups. Playing in a new defense which will only field two line backers in its core look having someone like the junior would have been perfect for the staff to depend on. Now, with the ACC Media Day coming up next week and the pre-season right around the corner, coach Fedora and his assistants will have to find someone else to fill in that vital role for the first season of the new defense. From the 2 deep depth chart the one that would be next in line for the position is sophomore Travis Hughes, who was highly valued when coming out of high school and could now show what he is made of.

In the end, for the first season of this new era at Kenan Stadium the old saying “it is what it is” pretty much says it all. The team will have to adjust itself and find a substitute for someone who could have been a key player on it, and do so with about two weeks before the start of the pre season. As I do with all the present and former Tar Heels let me wish all the best to Darius Lipford for the quickest and best recovery possible.
