Despite scoring on their opening drives the game didn’t see another point until the beginning of the 3rd quarter.  In a game plagued with injuries, turnovers, and inconvenient penalties Braxton Miller and the Ohio State Buckeyes edged out a 17-16 win over the Michigan State Spartans.  Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly of this Big Ten opener.

The Good:

It’s difficult to find a positive factor in a game that saw so many inconsistencies in every aspect of the game on both sides of the ball.  But with 315 total yards and a 63 yard touchdown, player of the game goes to Braxton Miller, despite his 2 turnovers.

Braxton Miller’s primary target was Philly Brown with 12 completions for 84 yards.  This accounted for the majority of Miller’s passing as he finished with 16 of 23 for 179 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Miller’s biggest play, despite focusing on Brown, was a 63 yard touchdown to Devin Smith.

Miller was most dangerous out of the pocket.  136 yards on the ground kept their offensive attack balanced and Michigan State’s defense guessing.  Despite coming out of the game twice because of injury, Miller managed to finish strong and help the Buckeyes come up with the win.

The Bad:

Ohio State running back, Jordan Hall, came out with a knee injury multiple times in the game and was pulled for good with 4:30 left in the 4th quarter.  Hall finished the game with 36 total yards and a touchdown.

Braxton Miller gave coach Urban Meyer a few scares himself.  Miller appeared to be injured on three different plays, one of these occasions he was pushed into a piece of equipment after running out of bounds.  Miller did not finish the opening drive but Ohio State managed to come away with the touchdown anyways.

The Ugly:

Urban Meyer is the 3rd coach in Ohio State history to start his tenure a 5-0.  Despite being ranked 14th in the country, starting 5-0, and taking home a strong win against a Big Ten power, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have no shot at a Big Ten title this year due to NCAA sanctions.
