When Hayden Fry took over the head football coaching position at the University of Iowa, one of the first things on his docket was to paint the visitors' locker room pink. Fry, a psychology major at Baylor, knew that jails and mental institutions as a pacifying method for patients. The Hawkeyes skipper felt that the color would distract visiting coaches and players.

The lockers, walls, carpeting, shower floors, sinks and urinals did get into some coaches' heads. The late Bo Schembechler of Michigan used to cover the walls with paper so his players wouldn't fall into Iowa's trap.

The current Michigan team isn't about to go covering the walls with dark paper when they visit Iowa City this upcoming weekend. In fact, if you ask Michigan senior defensive end Ryan Van Bergen, he's going to appreciate it.
"I love the pink locker room. I've never had an issue with the pink locker room. I think it gives it nice decor, the feng shui really feels good before the game. It warms you up. It's very welcoming."
When asked what he knows abour "feng shui", a Chinese practice in which a site or room is decorated to emphasize the "spirituality" that makes up the space, Van Bergen answered, "It's a word."

At least Van Bergen is giving himself career options should an career in the NFL not work out. The DE from U of M could always turn to HGTV. We'll still prefer guys who don't echo Iowa's cutesy maneuvers with cutesy quotes of their own. Then again, Van Bergen won't have many guys diving on the pile with him after using words like"decor" and "welcoming", even though it sounds like he'll openly welcome all comers.
