Rumors and Rants:
I don’t want to say we’re being purposely misled by media coverage of Penn State’s football team in the wake of NCAA sanctions, but Thursday’s report that Penn State was losing its backup kicker was reported with this lede: “Penn State lost its 13th player since the football program was hit with NCAA sanctions this summer in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal when backup kicker Matt Marcincin became the second Nittany Lion this week to leave the team.”
It’s the backup kicker! The story doesn’t even say whether the kicker leaving the team was in any way related to the sanctions by the NCAA or not. He might have just been sick of practicing. Or upset that he wasn’t the starting kicker in the wake of Sam Ficken’s meltdown last week. The kicker who left the team, Matt Marcincin, would have been the third-string kicker instead of the backup this year had 2011 starter Anthony Fera not transfered to Texas.
The intent of reporting every Penn State roster change is obviously to doc...

When the sun rose over Mount Nittany on Saturday morning, it had been 10 torturous months since Penn State last won a football game, and even longer since the Nittany Lions emerged victorious from Beaver Stadium.
Granted, in college football, 10 months isn't all that long. Not with an eight-month offseason, anyway. But for most in and around the Penn State program, the wait...
Penn State football's new era has cleared another hurdle.
The 34-7 win over Navy was the first victory for rookie coach Bill O'Brien. It was also the first win since the NCAA slammed the school with strict sanctions in July.
Linebacker Michael Mauti led the defense with 12 tackles. He says the win moves Penn State (1-2) another ''page forward'' and gives...
There is something special about a military fly over, and to me it never gets old. Penn State is observing military appreciation day as they host Navy this afternoon, and to add to the fanfare a pre-game military flyover was scheduled at the end of the Blue Band's performance of the National Anthem.
Here was the view, as I saw it, from the upper deck in the north end zone, surrounded...
A win – that’s what this Penn State football team needs more than anything else.
There has been a lot of talk about improving – improving in the second half, improving on third down defense, improving in the red zone. All of that would be wonderful, but what this team needs to do is win Saturday against Navy. It doesn’t matter how ugly it is, a victory is of the utmost...
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.— Matt McGloin had been waiting to make this call.
The seconds were ticking down in Penn State's 34-7 win Saturday over Navy, so the senior quarterback got teammates Jordan Hill and Gerald Hodges to sneak up behind rookie head coach Bill O'Brien to douse him with a bucket of water.

Penn State beats up on Navy for the first victory under its new head coach and since NCAA sanctions were leveled against the program.
NAVY (+7) at Penn State: Too many reasons not to take a chance on Navy in this great spot. First, PSU comes off a heartbreaking loss to Virginia last week. A game they should have won as they benefitted from four Virginia turnovers, but missed four field goals. Second, Navy comes off a bye after playing pretty poorly in Ireland verse ND two weeks ago. Third, PSU is still a depleted...
