The Gators had their first of two open practices on Friday. As Florida tries to rebuild some key parts from last year's defense, this spring will be an important part of adding depth and finding starters. The Florida pass rush had a good day on Friday while the secondary was able to take advantage of some errant throws, including two interceptions for junior Jabari Gorman.

The Florida offense looked to be passing the ball a little deeper than usual and testing the defense. Quarterback Jeff Driskel looked great for most of the day minus a couple of errant throws. Will Muschamp admits it on a routine basis -- he’s young but old fashioned. Part of that is why he knows the Gators have an important part of the defense to rebuild this spring. It’s the entire middle. The Gators lost both of the starting defensive tackles, inside linebackers and safeties following last season. The Florida Gators (26-6) advanced to the final of the SEC basketball tournament today by beating the Alabama Crimson Tide (21-12), 61-51.

Gators advance to semifinals

Florida head coach Billy Donovan challenged his team to respond. They closed the Southeastern Conference regular season with a loss at Kentucky, and Donovan wanted his team to get back to the level of play it was at early in conference play. Friday afternoon was a positive step in that direction. No. 13 Florida secured a blowout 80-58 win over LSU to advance to the tournament semifinals.

The Tigers got down big at half and couldn't climb back against Erik Murphy and Florida in the second. Murphy scored a career-high 27 points in guiding the Gators to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament.
