Maryland will be forced to deal with a quarterback situation that may be unprecedented in college football when they host Georgia Tech Saturday. Incredibly, the Terrapins lost their fourth quarterback of the season to injury in last week’s 20-17 loss to Boston College. That leaves them without a scholarship quarterback on the roster for their tilt with the Yellow Jackets. In response, head coach Randy Edsell said this week that true freshman linebacker Shawn Petty will be moved to offense and take over at quarterback. He was a high school option quarterback of some note last year in Maryland, according to reports. This development leaves Maryland in an almost untenable situation and this week’s college football odds reflect the premise. Georgia Tech, despite being throttled 41-17 by BYU last week, are solid 8-point favorites against the Terps. “This is just unbelievable,” Maryland head coach Randy Edsell said after news broke that Caleb Rowe suffered a torn ACL against Boston College and would be out the remainder of the year. “I don’t know something like this has ever happened to a team at that position.” Georgia Tech has its own issues to sort out, but certainly gets a big break by facing a quarterback with zero college experience. The Yellow Jackets have lost four of their last five games, though its noteworthy their lone win during that stretch did come at home against the same Boston College team that beat Maryland last week. Maryland has been done in each of the past two weeks by coughing up leads in the final minute. In their 20-18 loss to North Carolina State, the Wolfpack moved 60 yards in their final drive to set-up a game-winning field goal with 32 second left on the clock. Against Boston College, Maryland gave up a game-winning 14-yard touchdown pass with just 52 second left to drop to 4-4 on the season. With the exception of those late failures, the Terps defense hasn’t been too bad this season. They rank 28th in the nation with 20.3 points allowed per game and it will be up to them to keep this one close. With that said, the Yellow Jackets have to be licking their chops considering the quarterback situation at Maryland. Look for them to pull away late in this one and cover the 8-point spread.
