In what turned out to be a more competitive game than many had expected, the superstars on West Virginia were able to muster out a victory.

Heisman Trophy hopeful Geno Smith and notorious Terp-killer Tavon Austin connected on three touchdowns as the No. 8 Mountaineers outdueled Maryland, 31-21.

Smith tossed three touchdown passes, all to Austin, who had 13 catches for 179 yards on the afternoon. Austin led all players with 225 all-purpose yards.

Maryland quarterback Perry Hills did his best to keep pace with the West Virginia offense. Hills completed 20 passes for a career-high 305 yards with three touchdowns. Two of his touchdowns went to fellow true freshman Stefon Diggs. Starting in place of the injured Kerry Boykins, Diggs hauled in three passes for 113 yards in his own break-out game.

Maryland’s defense limited West Virginia to 31 points on 363 total yards of offense. Entering Saturday’s game, West Virginia had averaged 56 points and 612 yards per game.

West Virginia’s defense proved to be the difference-maker. Fourteen of West Virginia’s point came off of Maryland turnovers, including a 51-yard fumble returned for a touchdown early in the first quarter by Doug Rigg.

Hills did not throw an interception, but he, Marcus Leak, Brandon Ross and Devin Burns all coughed up the rock. In addition, a missed field goal attempt by Brad Craddock proved to be thorns in the side of the Terps.
