South Carolina beat Michigan 33-28 in the Outback Bowl yesterday. The game didn't end without a little controversy from the referee group though, and everybody loves controversy. Other than South Carolina in this case. Michigan went for it on 4th and 4 in their own territory while leading 22–21 in the fourth quarter. The ball clearly came up a couple inches short of the first down marker after the play, and the referee called it a first down anyway. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier went crazy pointing at the stick along with some Gamecock players that were in the area. Referee Jeff Maconaghy then took a second look and called the exact same thing. Maconaghy doesn't where rec specs, but he should think about getting a pair.
We can't be too mad at Jeff though. On the next play for Michigan, Jadeveon Clowney had one of the biggest hits in College football that caused a fumble by Michigan RB Vincent Smith which South Carolina recovered. In the end it all worked out for the best.
