Speight could return to Ann Arbor after all. Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

We may have to pump our brakes on a Wilton Speight transfer.

Speight announced in late November that he was planning to leave Michigan as a graduate transfer. Not long thereafter it was reported that former Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson was transferring to Michigan. Though Patterson has already enrolled at Michigan, Speight is considering a return to the Wolverines.

The Detroit Free Press says Speight is open to returning to Michigan if Patterson is declared ineligible to play in the fall. Transfers typically are forced by the NCAA to sit out a year, but Patterson is appealing to play immediately because he is arguing he was lied to by Ole Miss during the recruiting process about their NCAA sanctions.

The Free Press also reports that Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said he would be open to Speight returning to the program.

Speight is currently working out in Los Angeles. He would need to be enrolled in a graduate program by the fall to be eligible for football season.

Speight was Michigan’s starting quarterback in 2016 and helped them to a 10-3 season. He was the starter for the beginning of 2017 until he suffered a back injury against Purdue. Brandon Peters became the starting quarterback after his injury.

The other three quarterbacks on Michigan’s roster include Peters, redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffrey and true freshman Joe Milton.
