Report: Troy Hiring Notre Dame OC Gerad Parker As Next Head Coach

The back-to-back Sun Belt champions appear to have their next head football coach lined up.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Monday morning that the Troy Trojans are expected to make Notre Dame offensive Coordinator Gerad Parker the program's next head coach. Jon Sumrall, who was the head coach of Troy the last two seasons, was hired at Tulane a few weeks ago.

Like Sumrall, Parker is also a former player from the University of Kentucky. The two were teammates at UK, along with former Troy head coach Neal Brown.

Parker's only season as Notre Dame's OC resulted in 39.1 points-per-game, second-most in the history of the program.

This will be Parker's first full-time position as a head coach, although he was Purdue's interim head coach in 2016 following the firing of Darrell Hazel.

Parker also previously spent time as the offensive coordinator at West Virginia and as the passing game coordinator at Penn State.

Per Thamel, a formal announcement is expected early this week.

The Troy Trojans are currently preparing to face Duke in the Birmingham Bowl under the direction of defensive coordinator and interim head coach Greg Gasparato.
