On Thursday, Bob Stoops made one of his most surprising calls in his long tenure as Sooners’ coach and that’s naming redshirt freshman Trevor Knight his starting quarterback. Knight had beaten out the “Belldozer,” junior Blake Bell, who had been the favorite for some time after his experience with the team for the past two seasons. Reports were said that Knight beat out Bell because Bell wasn’t consistent enough in all aspects of his game. Knight, a San Antonio native, threw for 27 touchdowns and ran for another 15 at San Antonio Ronald Reagan High School. He also accounted for over 3,000 yards. The Sooners open the season up on August 31 when they face Louisiana-Monroe in Norman. Stoops says Knight will start, but hasn’t ruled out that Bell could take over the job. He expects both players to continue to work hard and be ready for the opener. Bell, who is 6-foot-5, has accounted for 24 rushing touchdowns while at OU. Earlier in the month, sophomore Kendal Thompson fractured his foot on the first day of fall practice. He was also competing for the starting gig. Knight becomes the first new Sooners’ quarterback since Landry Jones started his great career in 2009, while taking over for an injured Sam Bradford. The Sooners will be looking for their ninth Big 12 title this year and another trip to the BCS, this time to the first BCS playoff bracket. The team is ranked 16th in the preseason polls and predicted, by the coaches, to finish second in the conference behind Oklahoma State. Oklahoma finished last season, 15th, and 10-3 after its blowout loss to Heisman winner Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.
