Last night, I had the pleasure to sit down and watch the Utah State Aggies battle the Utah Utes on ESPN.  I was expecting something major from the huge 6’4, 320 pound defensive tackle.  Star Lotulelei has been called the best defensive tackle in the NFL Draft by most and compared to the likes of Haloti Ngata.  Well, I don’t know what they are watching because last night he was manhandled by the guard of Utah State the entire game.  Star was an All-America candidate is coming off a first-team all-Pac-12 season when he won the 2011 Morris Trophy as the league’s best defensive lineman as voted on by the starting offensive linemen. projects him as the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL draft, because he is supposedly a big, athletic “block eater” faces double and even triple teams on virtually every play.  Well that was not the case last night, I only saw the big man get in the backfield a few times, and give credit to Utah State guard Jamie Markosian who man handled Star the entire game making him a non-Star. Utah State carved up Utah both on the ground and in the air, as they totaled 380 total yards on Utah.  The big man is known as a run stuffer but the Aggies ran the option all over the Utes.  They ran a total of 164 yards on the ground, including a play in overtime where Star was blocked down on and opened a huge hole for the running back.

I am sorry fans, maybe you see this kid as a run stuffer, but he is no better than Dontari Poe from last year’s draft.  Poe was drafted high because of his workout at the combine, but remember this he too was pushed around in games last year in Memphis.  Poe was drafted very high by the Chiefs but was not worth the pick.  I wouldn’t draft Star Lotulelei in the first 20 picks.  He is no where near the player that people say he is, he could be the best defensive tackle in the draft, but if that is the case, I would send my scouts to look at Jamie Markosian of Utah State who owned the big man the entire game.
