Texas A&M loses another to transfer portal, this time a former five-star WR

The times are changing in College Station, and those surrounding the Texas A&M Aggies are holding on to hope that change will be a good thing.

Out goes Jimbo Fisher and it comes Mike Elko, who went 16-9 in two seasons at Duke — a school not traditionally known to hang around the AP Top 25.

Elko could be the coach to lead Texas A&M to the promised land, but along with any change in leadership will come deflectors. For Elko and the Aggies, that means watching another talented player walk out the door.

The latest in a string of deflections since the coaching change is Evan Stewart, a talented sophomore wide receiver who was among the top receivers on the team in 2023.

He'll go down as the 15th player to leave Texas A&M via the transfer portal this offseason.

Stewart came to College Station with a ton of hype and he mostly delivered on that, which makes this a big loss for the Aggies. As a recruit, he was a five-star prospect, ranked as the No. 1 wide receiver (No. 6 recruit overall) in the 2022 class, according to 247Sports.

Stewart was a member of the All-SEC freshman team after notching 53 catches for 649 yards and two touchdowns in Year 1. He caught 38 passes for 514 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore.

He'll have two years of eligibility remaining.
