Jon Gray 300x225 Texas recruit Jon Gray is Gatorade National POY

Entering the 2011 high school football season, there was little doubt in peoples’ minds that Aledo High School running back– and 2012 University of Texas football commit– John Gray was the best running back in the state of Texas.

Apparently, voters for the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award think that Gray is in fact the nation’s best overall player.

It was announced this morning that Gray had been named as the Gatorade POY for his accomplishments both on the field of play and in the classroom. Gray owns almost every state high school rushing record of note in Texas, including career carries, touchdowns, points, 100-yard games and most touchdowns in a season.

He is only the third running back in the history of the state of Texas to rush for over 10,000 yards in a career and also maintains a solid B average in the classroom and is very active volunteering in the community of Aledo.

In earning John Gray’s committment, the Texas Longhorns are adding to one of the most lethal backfields in college football- assuming everyone can stay healthy going forward.

The combination of Malcolm Brown, Joe Bergeron, and John Gray could grind opposing defenses into the ground in 2012, assuming that Texas’ young offensive line continues to mature and improve, and that the two incumbents can avoid the injuries which plagued them and limited the overall production of each during the 2011 campaign.

Congratulations to John Gray on winning one of the nation’s most prestigious awards for a high school athlete.

Texas fans can only hope this award is just the beginning.

Texas lands in the Holiday Bowl against Cal

Since 2000, the Texas Longhorns football team has made a home away from home in San Diego in late December. Most recently, Texas faced off against the Arizona Sun Devils in the 2007 edition of the game, leaving San Diego with a 52-34 victory. Mack Brown’s team also made the trip to Cali in 2000, 2001, and 2003. This time around Texas’ opponent will be the California...

Great Scott (again): Texas safety will miss Holiday Bowl

It’s been somewhat of an eventful season for Texas safety Christian Scott. The senior already missed three games this season after a bizarre incident involving a repo employee in August. Scott then sustained a wrist injury just before the Red River game against Oklahoma. Unfortunately for Scott, that wrist injury will keep him from playing…
