It appears that the transfer bug has yet again hit the Texas football program.
This time around it’s redshirt freshman wideout Chris Jones that has decided to leave the program. Buried on the depth chart beneath Jaxon Shipley, Mike Davis and Darius White, Jones appears to have a desire to move to a school closer to his roots in the small East Texas town of Daingerfield.
When asked about his decision, Jones’ language suggested that he was a little homesick and maybe out of his element on the Forty Acres.
On the surface this seems like an impulsive move for a young receiver that could eventually crack the rotation for Texas. Very rarely do young wide receivers play as many minutes as Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley have collectively over the course of the past two seasons, so it’s a little difficult to surmise what Jones’ expectations were.
Obviously, one of his expectations was to be a bigger part of the Texas offense than he was given the opportunity to be.
Jones’ departure caps off a mass exodus of recievers this season including Greg Timmons, Malcolm Williams and Brock Fitzhenry and further thins the depth chart. Luckily, the running game has become the staple of the Texas offense recently, and the loss of Jones won’t be damaging to production overall.
Best of luck to Chris Jones in the future.
