West Virginia quarterback Ford Childress can put the Mountaineers’ quarterback controversy to rest with a strong performance against Maryland Saturday in Baltimore. The redshirt freshman had a promising performance against first-year FBS program Georgia State last Saturday. For a first-time starter, Childress looked comfortable, throwing for three touchdowns, over 350 yards and just one mere interception. Maryland is stiffer competition, however. The Terrapins are currently 3-0 and their defense ranks 18th overall with199.7 passing yards per game and 96.7 rushing yards per game. They also lead the nation in sacks with 14 and will pressure and challenge Chiildress’s poise, decision-making, and resilience. In attempt to keep the Terps defense true and uneasy, Childress will have to manage an up-tempo attack throughout the afternoon. A different environment for Childress in M&T Bank Stadium will also be something to pay close attention to. This will be the first road test for the starting quarterback and the first time he’ll play in a professional stadium. Some quarterbacks react well to that added pressure while others may let that get to their heads. There’s a lot more riding on this game than Childress’s position, this game could solidify the Mountaineers’ chance at a bowl game in 2013. Although the defense has proved itself, the offense has struggled in three games with wide receivers dropping passes and Childress and former starting quarterback Paul Millard underthrowing receivers. This game can easily become an overall turning point. In 49 games since 1919, WVU leads the all-time series against Maryland 26-21-2. The Mountaineers have won the last seven games, and the matchup will be the first time West Virginia is unranked going into this rivalry game since 2005. In the last two years, WVU has only been unranked twice at the time of this border war. So, with all that in mind, Childress will truly be tested against a Maryland team looking to go 4-0 under head coach Randy Edsall. Time will tell if Childress is truly ‘Built Ford Tough’ as WVU fans have nicknamed the quarterback. If his performance is above expectations, then West Virginia has truly found its quarterback, and if he fails to meet expectations, it could be trouble. -Batra
