Outback Bowl referee Jeff Maconaghy’s blown first-down call from Tuesday was bad enough for anybody and everybody to see.

After Michigan elected to go for it on fourth-and-4 in their own territory while leading 22–21 in the fourth quarter, the chains were brought out to measure the close play. The ball was clearly short of the first-down marker, but Maconaghy inexplicably signaled a first down.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and some Gamecocks player implored Maconaghy to take a closer look, which he did. Yet even after that, the referee did not change his mind.

As it turns out, even a 3-year-old girl who was placed in front of the TV could see it was a bad call.

“The referee said it’s touching that pole,” the girl tells the camera, referring to the ball’s proximity to the first down marker. “But it’s really not.”

For just 3 years old, the girl displays a preternatural ability to motion toward a screen and break down a football game without falling back on esoteric jargon. No wonder the top comment on the video is from a CNN assignment editor hoping to get the young girl on TV.

O Rawls, Where Art Thou?

Rawls' 63-yard TD run against Illinois in garbage time this season, was his career long, by far. Emailer Mike writes: Brad, no one, and I mean no one has said a word about Rawls not playing. Not you, not any of the other blogs, not the papers, not the radio, not TV, NO ONE! What gives? Well Mike, Thomas Rawls' absence from the Outback Bowl was not widely reported...

25 Best NSFW Jadeveon Clowney Just Killed A Running Back Tweets

When South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney met Michigan running back Vincent Smith in the backfield of yesterday’s Outback Bowl, Twitter seemed to freeze. Nothing else was going on in the world. Referee Blows First Down Call at Outback Bowl

South Carolina beat Michigan 33-28 in the Outback Bowl yesterday.  The game didn't end without a little controversy from the referee group though, and everybody loves controversy.  Other than South Carolina in this case.   Michigan went for it on 4th and 4 in their own territory while leading 22–21 in the fourth quarter.  The ball clearly came up a couple inches short...

Jadeveon Clowney Clobbers Vincent Smith During 2013 Outback Bowl: Video

On the first day of the new year, South Carolina star defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney delivered what might stand as football’s best hit of 2013. The Hit Heard ‘Round The World: The Internet Sure Does Love Jadeveon Clowney

On one hand, if the NFL didn’t have its rule that a player must be three years removed from high school to be eligible to play professional football, South Carolina Gamecocks sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney would be the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. That means that the 2012 Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day would have been the last time SC fans would have watched their...

Jadeveon Clowney Might be the Best Player In College Football

The 2013 NFL Draft is a weak one partly because it won’t feature South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney, who we here at Unathletic are declaring the best player in college football. Yes, an extremely challenging thing to evaluate because of the different positions and the way they impact the game. Either way, this guy is a beast and surefire #1 pick in 2014.
