Jordan Shipley 300x225 Two Longhorn NFLers suffer season ending injuries

Saturday was a great day for Texas Longhorns fans across the country as the young 2011 squad played a complete 60-minute game, routing the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.

Unfortunately, Sunday was a rough day for two former Longhorns, as both Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jordan Shipley suffered season-ending ACL tears. Both men have been placed on their respective teams’ Injured Reserve lists– effectively ending their 2011 campaigns.

This is an unfortunate development for both Charles and Shipley, who were expected to play major roles in their teams’ offenses this season. Charles is one of the emerging young dual-threat backs in the NFL and was poised for a breakout campaign in 2011. With the departure of Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, Shipley was expected to be a primary target for TCU rookie quarterback Andy Dalton in Cincinnati.

Both men have a history of injury issues, so one can only hope that their recovery time and rehabilitation cycles go as planned. Shipley sat out a large part of his early collegiate career at Texas with multiple knee injuries. Charles has had ankle and knee issues throughout his time at Texas and with the Chiefs.

Injuries are a part of football–unfortunately– it’s just tough timing for each of these former Texas stars who were looking to make names for themselves in 2011.

Shipley and Charles are tough– they’re winners– and they’ll both do whatever it takes to be back on the field on Sundays next fall.

You can at least count on that much.
