According to multiple sources, the University of Hawaii football program is under investigation for point shaving by the Honolulu Police department.

The investigation stems from an anonymous letter sent to the Hawaii office of admissions, accusing several football players of point shaving– although no specific players were named.

Upon receipt of the letter, Hawaii contacted both the Honolulu Police Department and the NCAA regarding its contents and according to its officials, is complying with the NCAA and its investigation.

Due to the ongoing investigation, Hawaii officials have declined to comment on more specific details, but it is fair to assume that these details will become a part of the public record sooner than later. Given that point shaving is considered a felony offense for those who participate, the University and the Honolulu Police Department will be sure to make this a priority case in coming weeks.

Similar point-shaving cases in the past, including the infamous scandals in the late 1940s in college basketball, left plenty of people in their wake– not only players who fell prey to the promises of making an easy buck, but also those who were caught in the middle and were held accountable for a despicable practice that often claims many victims.

We can only hope that the allegations against the University of Hawaii program prove to be false and no greater harm results.

If the allegations are true, this type of misdeed could easily lead to a very harsh penalty levied by the NCAA and criminal penalty for the student-athletes who were involved.

No matter what, the University of Hawaii will be dealing with the worst type of publicity possible as the holiday season closes near.
