Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer has dismissed kicker Cody Journell from the team.
Beamer announced the senior's dismissal Wednesday, citing a violation of team policies. Beamer declined further comment.
Journell made 10 of 16 field goal attempts and 24 of 26 extra-point tries this season.
The school says Journell's replacement hasn't been determined. The Hokies (7-3, 4-2 ACC) host Maryland (5-4, 1-4) on Saturday in Blacksburg.
Beamer also had suspended Journell for Virginia Tech's Sept. 21 game against Marshall for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Journell pleaded guilty in May 2012 to misdemeanor trespassing. He was suspended from the team for seven months and missed Virginia Tech's 2012 Sugar Bowl appearance.

In the end however, one can’t say that this kid didn’t have his fair shot...
Jim Weaver, who has shepherded Virginia Tech through two conference realignments and overseen vast facilities improvements in 16 years as the school's athletic director, is stepping down.

Freshman Ben Emelogu scored a game-high 22 points to lead Virginia Tech past West Virginia 87-82 on Tuesday.
Adam Smith added 19 points for the Hokies (1-1), who rallied from a 17-point deficit in the first half. Smith scored seven of Virginia Tech's last nine points.

For the majority of the first half of Tuesday's afternoon matinee against Virginia Tech, it appeared as if West Virginia was going to be able to cruise to a victory.
The Terps are coming off a disappointing loss at home to Syracuse, and they'll attempt to grab elusive win No. 6 this Saturday in Blacksburg, Va., against Virginia Tech. The Hokies bounced back after two straight losses with a resounding win against nationally-ranked Miami, so this doesn't figure to be an easy game for a struggling Maryland squad.
Ja’Von Harrison has been committed to Virginia Tech for more than a year, but several others are after the Hokies pledge. The 2014 wide receiver of Lakeland (Fla.) Kathleen says a lot is up in the air right now about his recruitment. Here’s the latest.
I know Virginia Tech fans have been obsessed with Frank Beamer's special teams prowess for decades, but it doesn't get much more awkward than putting Cody Journell, the freaking kicker, on your game tickets.Oh, my bad, it does.It gets a lot more awkward when that same kicker gets kicked off the team three days before the game he's on the tickets for actually happens.Whoops...
