On Thursday, the name “Lennay Kekua” popped back up on the internet as college football fans snickered at the fact it had been exactly one year since former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o's fake girlfriend supposedly died from “complications due to leukemia” on Sept. 12, 2012. As you remember, Te’o had a “heroic” performance against Michigan State just a couple days later, with 12 tackles in a 20-3 victory in East Lansing that sparked the Irish’s undefeated regular season. It was in January that Deadspin revealed that Kekua was, in fact, a giant hoax and, well, you know the rest. The Twittersphere certainly hasn’t forget, as many honored the one-year anniversary with snarky tweets like this: One year ago today, Lennay Kekua died, before she even had a chance to live. #neverforget — Jonathan Chait (@jonathanchait) September 12, 2013 Going home early . One-year anniversary of Lennay Kekua’s death. Hug your children tighter. — Mick Shaffer (@mickshaffer) September 12, 2013 On this day, one year ago, Lennay Kekua passed away. One RT = One prayer — Zach Fleer (@ZachFleerLGHL) September 12, 2013 RIP Lennay Kekua, who died a year ago today.I left some flowers on her grave… pic.twitter.com/OkLMIGt8aV — Peyton’s Head (@PeytonsHead) September 12, 2013 We hope Te’o, now with the San Diego Chargers, had time to do the same.
