Interesting article out of The Oklahoman about which five incoming OU football players will make the biggest impact this season. You can give or take on their selections, but just getting JUCOs St. John and Russell actually into camp is the first worry, as they are both late already working on getting qualified and approved by the NCAA.
Assuming he arrives in camp by mid-July, my two choices out fo those five are Hatari Byrd and Quincy Russell. Byrd has the talent, size and skills to make a difference in a secondary that has struggled the last couple of seasons. There was a lot of positive coach speak about Safety Gabe Lynn this spring as there had been in previous seasons, only to see him torched in the regular season, so Byrd will likely get a shot to play and make the best of it.
Russell is just a big athletic defensive tackle who is going to be called on and quickly. The defensive tackle position for the Sooner is there biggest area of weakness and immediate help is required. Most of the current defensive tackles in camp are better suited as backups or defensive ends. Russell will get his chance and he has all the tools to be a really good one for the Sooners.
Who do you think are the most likely incoming difference makers for the Sooners this fall?
