The Wisconsin Badgers clearly needed something to change after an embarrassing 10-7 loss to Oregon State on Saturday. Well, a change has been made.

Head coach Bret Bielema fired offensive line coach Mike Markuson after just two games, but he swears it’s not a knee-jerk reaction to his team’s slow start offensively.

Bielema claimed there were personal matters involving Markuson’s family but also made sure to let it be known he wasn’t happy with the performance of his offensive line.

Bielema had the following to say about the decision:

“I know everybody’s got their own forgone conclusions of what transpired. It wasn’t a knee-jerk thing by me, it’s something that we kind of talked about and processed through.”

The Badgers have had serious issues opening holes for running back Montee Ball and protecting quarterback Danny O’Brien in a 26-21 Week 1 win over Northern Iowa, and this weekend’s loss to Oregon State.

Let’s be real here, Bielema needed to send a message that whatever is going on with his team isn’t going to stand moving forward. The offensive line has been atrocious, so he made the 51-year-old Markuson his sacrificial lamb. Markuson was hired in January of this year.

If things continue to go badly don’t be surprised if other changes come. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada called an awful game on Saturday, opting to throw the ball 38 times, while handing it off just 15 times to Ball.

O’Brien completed just 20 of those 38 passes for just 172 yards (4.5 yards per attempt). Those are some horrible numbers.

Things better improve in Madison, or this season could quickly spiral out of control.
