PLAYERS: Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong introduced himself as a seven-time Tour de France champion at a cancer conference in Montreal on Wednesday. ''My name is Lance Armstrong. I am a cancer survivor,'' he said to open his speech to the World Cancer Congress. ''I'm a father of five. And yes, I won the Tour de France seven times.'' Armstrong announced last week he would no longer challenge the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's drug charges against him. USADA threw out his competitive victories dating to 1998, which would include all seven Tour wins. Armstrong, who has maintained his innocence, focused on his experience as a cancer survivor and the work of his charitable foundation. He added he refuses to be distracted from the fight against cancer.

Lance Armstrong's Legacy Destroyed As Allegations Finally Catch Up With Former Hero

Nobody will ever be able to take away what Lance Armstrong did in defeating cancer and then raising money and awareness to try and find a cure. Everything else, however, is just about gone for Armstrong. Armstrong's fame was always rooted in the success he found on a bicycle. The awareness and fame that he got was routed deeply in riding his bike. So when he decided to drop his...

Tyler Hamilton book now set for Sept. 5 release

Tyler Hamilton's tell-all book about Lance Armstrong and doping in cycling will be released two weeks earlier than originally planned. ''The Secret Race: Inside the Hidden World of the Tour de France: Doping, Cover-ups, and Winning at All Costs,'' is now scheduled for release Sept. 5. Ballantine Bantam Dell touts the book as the ''first deeply detailed...

Lance Armstrong Story Leaves Me Feeling Dirty

The news that the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) stripped Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles left me feeling as if I needed a shower. Something about the whole sorry saga seems dirty, as if deals and agreements were secretly brokered behind closed doors in smoke-filled rooms. Or as if the unexplained vendetta of a few zealots had finally won the day. Armstrong'...

Donors standing by Lance Armstrong's foundation

Lance Armstrong's reputation may be in tatters but in the eyes of corporate and individual donors, his charity still wears an unsullied yellow jersey. Armstrong announced last week he would no longer fight the doping allegations that have dogged him for years. He was subsequently stripped of his record seven Tour de France titles and banned from professional cycling. But in...

Armstrong’s white flag should change nothing

As someone who has been such a huge fan of Lance Armstrong for so many years, last night was a tough pill to swallow. Lance Armstrong probably lost a lot of fans with the statement he decided to release yesterday. While there was no admission of guilt in the 800+ words, there was an admission of surrender. His decision to stop his fight against those who have long accused him...

Lance Armstrong the latest sports star to have his accomplishments questioned

Remember the days when you could become arm-strong just on natural ability and work ethic? Well, those times are apparently as antiquated as using elbow grease and whipping out the old Thomas Guide to find your way somewhere. (Yes, boys and girls: the iPhone is a relatively new phenomenon.) Lance Armstrong has become the latest athlete to see his legacy crushed by allegations of...

Hamilton: Armstrong helped me cheat

Tyler Hamilton says Lance Armstrong gave him an illegal blood booster at his house before the 1999 Tour de France and the two teammates compared notes on using performance-enhancing drugs as far back as 1998.

Should pro leagues allow PEDs?

If Lance Armstrong is the biggest lie in sports, Lyle Alzado was its spawn. It has been 20 years since the brain cancer wasted away and eventually killed the once-hulking former NFL lineman. Steroids had been made a controlled substance by Congress a couple of years earlier, but the images of a gaunt Alzado and his assertions that steroid use had led to his illness did more to demonize...

Careless Whispers Featuring Mike Munger tonight at 9 ET!

Matt Rury is off being Angry Softball Guy this week, so Mike Munger gracefully offered to fill in.  Mike and Calvin generally agree on everything, so tune in tonight to hear them harmonize on the Jeff Green contract, the Red Sox/Dodgers trade, and Lance Armstrong.  Peanut Mike and Jelvin, together at last, tonight at 9 [...]

Jose Canseco supports Lance Armstrong and being a Vampire

Jose Canseco is now a columnist, of some sort. After all, what else is he supposed to these days? The former AL MVP and former MLB All-Star who once claimed to have been blackballed by Bud Selig and the league, fancies himself an expert on steroids. So he took the time to write a piece [...]
