Bernie Ecclestone claims ‘wrong people’ at Haas signed Mick Schumacher just because of the name

Mick Schumacher drove for Haas in 2021 and 2022 after being signed following his stellar F2 campaign. The German was let go by Haas after costing the team a significant amount in damages in 2022 and was left without a seat in 2023, following a falling-out with team principal Guenther Steiner.

Schumacher joined Mercedes as a reserve driver in 2023 after being scouted by team principal Toto Wolff. Schumacher furthered his racing career by signing a deal with Alpine to race in the 2024 World Endurance Championship which includes the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Former F1 CEO and billionaire Bernie Ecclestone claims that the legendary Michael Schumacher’s son Mick being signed by Haas was a wrong move by the American team. Ecclestone alleges that the team hired Schumacher for the 2021 season just because of the weight his name carried and not the actual skill they saw in the German.

Mick got lost on the wrong team with the wrong people . At Haas they took his name. They never cared about how good or bad he was Bernie Ecclestone said, as reported by formulapassion.it

Schumacher has a good track record, outperforming his Russian teammate Nikita Mazepin despite terrible machinery in 2021. Although Schumacher did lose out to Mazepin’s more experienced replacement Kevin Magnussen in 2022, he finished ahead of the Dane in 12 races out of 21.

Bernie Ecclestone gives a painful opinion on Mercedes’ 2023 season

Mercedes failed to win a single race in 2023 after taking victory in only a single one in 2022, the second year in a row that the Brackley-based team was unable to have any strong showing or contention for a championship.

Though Mercedes has repeatedly expressed pride in their comeback in 2023 despite a substandard car, Bernie Ecclestone feels otherwise. The 93-year-old former F1 boss feels that Mercedes should not have failed as badly as they did, taking a dig at the squad of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

[Lewis] Hamilton failed a bit and [George] Russell wasn’t as good as he thought he was either. Still, they shouldn’t have lost so dramatically. Bernie Ecclestone said, as reported by PlanetF1

Ecclestone’s opinion on Hamilton’s team comes just as the septuple champion’s 2008 championship comes under pressure due to an interview by Ecclestone. After the ex-F1 CEO admitted his knowledge of the Crashgate scandal, 2008 title contender Felipe Massa took the statement as grounds to pursue the title in a lawsuit.
