Just when some thought the WVU baseball season may spiral and the Mountaineers would lose favor in rankings, Randy Mazey’s team swept UCF. Several major polls are now ranking WVU among the top teams in the country despite a loss to a struggling Marshall team last week.

West Virginia players and coaches woke up on Monday morning, learning they are ranked in the top 30 in at least three major polls. Baseball America is awarding the Mountaineers with their highest rank at No. 18 while D1Baseball has West Virginia at No. 22 and RPI at No. 27.

Despite the extra innings loss to Marshall, WVU has been a different team since the return of super-star JJ Wetherholt, who missed 24 games with a leg injury. West Virginia is 6-1 with Wetherholt back in the lineup with two sweeps over conference teams. Most recently, Wetherholt smashed two home runs over the weekend against UCF.

Wetherholt may receive most of the recognition, and for good reason, but it’s Reed Chumley who left the weekend as the hero. Chumley hit a walk-off homer to complete the sweep of the Knights on Sunday afternoon.

WVU Baseball will now hope to stay hot with the rival Pitt Panthers coming to Morgantown for on Wednesday. First pitch for the baseball Backyard Brawl at Kendrick Family Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
