WVU Baseball Beats Pitt on Record Breaking Night

Tuesday was far from just a typical night at the ballpark. Tuesday saw WVU Baseball beat a rival and set an attendance record all in the same night.

West Virginia won the baseball Backyard Brawl 6-3 over Pitt, the last one in Morgantown with Randy Mazey leading the Mountaineers, in front of a record crowd.

WVU even revealed an attendance number of 4,614 on the scoreboard during the game. This marks the largest crowd ever at the newly coined Kendrick Family Ballpark.

Always a flare for the dramatic, West Virginia had to hang on after holding a 6-0 lead late in the game. Pitt scored three runs in the eighth inning, but their effort was not enough and WVU came out victorious.

WVU scored their six runs off seven hits while the Panthers stranded 11 runners on base out of 13 hits.

The festivities were almost tempered when super-star JJ Wetherholt, who started at short stop for the first time since he returned from injury as a DH, left the game in the third inning. Mazey cleared up any confusion about Whetherholt’s status after the game, saying he was sent to Buffalo Wild Wings to get something to eat.

West Virginia is now 7-1 in their last eight games with two Big 12 sweeps and holds a 23-14 (11-4 Big 12) record on the season.

Regardless of this night, Mazey still has one last Brawl left. Mazey’s WVU Baseball team will meet Pitt in Pittsburgh at PNC Park on Tuesday, April 30.
