PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Arnold Palmer was the last playing captain for the USA Ryder Cup team aÃâ¬Ã" nearly a half-century ago.
Davis Love III would like to change that.
The captain of this year's red, white and blue charges who face Europe in September in Chicago shot a pace-setting, course-record-tying 6-under-par 64 to take a two-shot lead in Thursday's first round of the Honda Classic at PGA National Resort & Spa. He leads a large group at 66, including Rory McIlroy, who will become No. 1 in the world if he wins this week. Another large group is at 67, including 2011 PGA Tour rookie of the year Keegan Bradley.
In the calmest conditions of the day, Love, 47, aced the par-3 fifth with a 5-iron from 197 yards and added five other birdies on the Champion Course in the morning wave of tee times to confirm that his intentions to make the Ryder Cup team are not a pipe dream.
