LPGA golfer Natalie Gulbis reportedly withdrew from the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore two weeks ago because of flu-like symptoms. However, her ailment turned out to be much worse than a common flu.On Tuesday, it was announced that Gulbis had withdrawn from the RR Donnelley Founders Cup in Phoenix due to malaria she contracted in Asia. The mosquito-borne infectious disease displays many of the same symptoms as the flu including chills, fever, body aches, sweating, and vomiting, among others. The LPGA and IMG, Gulbis' management team, have released the following statement:"Natalie originally became ill in Singapore and she was treated and medically cleared to fly home," according to the statement. "Natalie continues to be treated at home and is expected to be at full strength in three weeks. Natalie's well-being is a top priority for both the LPGA and IMG, and steps continue to be taken to ensure the well-being of Natalie and all the players on the LPGA Tour now and for future events. LPGA doctors have been consulted and believe she is on appropriate medications, under great care, and her prognosis is excellent."Gulbis is hoping to return to the tour by the first week of April when the Kraft Nabisco Championship takes place.Scottsdale Healthcare is on-site in Phoenix to provide blood screenings for players, caddies, and family members who wish to be tested.Via USA TODAY
