Hunter Mahan has withdrawn from the Australian Open because of soreness behind his right shoulder.
Mahan says the area near his scapula was sore a few days ago and only slightly improved during the first round, when he opened with a 73. He says it didn't improve Friday morning, and did not want to risk further injury before the Presidents Cup.
Mahan says he still expects to play next week at Royal Melbourne.
That leaves two U.S. members with health issues going into the Presidents Cup. Steve Stricker has not played since the Tour Championship at the end of September because of a neck injury that makes his left arm feel weak.
U.S. captain Fred Couples has said that if someone can't play, he would replace him with PGA champion Keegan Bradley.
