Graham DeLaet This week the PGA Tour stops in the land of maple syrup and moose at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. The Canadian Open is the third-oldest tournament in professional golf behind the Open Championship and U.S. Open. Glen Abbey is one of Jack Nicklaus’ first designs and this week will mark the 26th time this tournament will be held here. The field is not lacking in star power, and with four regular season weeks before the FedEx Cup playoffs, everyone will be vying for a chance to nab the 500 FedEx Cup points at stake. There is a total of 13 Canadians in the field this week, and a few have caught my eye. Graham DeLaet has had five straight top 25s and leads the PGA Tour in greens in regulation, which makes him a good contender this week. David Hearn is the other, and as you may remember, he was on the losing end of the three-way playoff at the John Deere Classic a few weeks back. These two players will be fighting for not only the RBC Canadian Open trophy, but also for the Rivermead Challenge Cup, which is presented to the low Canadian. Among the high profile players in the field like Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker, who are third and fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, respectively, there are also a few players who have been trending up lately and should have a solid week. First, Daniel Summerhays has been around the top of the leaderboard the past few weeks, including a playoff loss last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Regardless of the difficulty of the courses, Summerhays has shot 65 or better three times in the last three weeks. Second, Hideki Matsuyama, the young gun from Japan, has just 10 starts as a pro, but let this sink in, nine of them have resulted in top 10s. Lastly, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy, Morgan Hoffmann, has had four straight top 25s. The field is deep and filled with proven stars this week as well as a plethora of young talent. The weather looks as though temperatures will be looming in the high 70s and low 80s with sunshine and light wind, so favorable to say the least. I’m anxious to see whether a young talent, proven veteran, or Canadian will win this week. It’s been 49 years since a Canadian has won, so you can bet if one is lurking atop the leaderboard on Sunday, there will be shouts of “O Canada” echoing between the pints of Moosehead Lager.
