Ben Crane's season came to an abrupt end Friday when he withdrew from The Barclays with a back injury.
Crane was happy just to get into the FedEx Cup playoffs as the 125th and final player to qualify. He opened with a 67, a good start toward moving into the top 100 players who advance to the second playoff event next week outside Boston.

With golfer Ben Crane leading the PGA tour in putting from distances of 25 feet or more, he recently offered Golf Digest readers some advice on how to make more 5-to-15 foot putts. Namely, Crane recommends having a plan for how to react after you make your putt before you take the shot.

Ben Crane has withdrawn from the PGA Championship because of a back injury.
It's the second straight major that Crane has missed, though this one could not be helped. He was an alternate at the British Open, chose not to fly to England because it looked unlikely he would get in, and had to give up his spot when Russ Cochran withdrew on the opening day at Royal Lytham.

Ben Crane was on vacation with his family three years ago when it came to an abrupt end. His brother just happened to notice a crawler on television that said Phil Mickelson had withdrawn from the British Open, and Crane was next alternate to replace him.
There was one problem. This was on a Friday. Crane was in Idaho. The Open was at Turnberry.

Ben Crane had to wait until the end of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to make sure he was going to the Masters.
Crane was No. 48 in the world ranking. This was the final week for players to get into the Masters by being in the top 50. Crane missed the cut, but slipped only to No. 49.
Paul Lawrie, who won the Qatar Masters this year, also got in at No. 46.

Wasted, but not lost during Super Bowl weekend was a gutsy performance during the Waste Management Phoenix Open. I'll be completely honest in that I had to look up who won (Kyle Stanley).
